The amazing disappearing lakes, pt. 2 Aral Sea coda

There’s been some fuss made lately about last-ditch attempts to save the Aral. This finely wrought movie posted by the Australian film-making company, Journeyman Productions, does a great job of documenting both the devastation wrought by the Aral’s demise and the recent measures taken to replenish it. The filmmakers draw overly optimistic conclusions and present them in a ludicrously sunny fashion. The phrase “too little, too late” is tragically apt in this case; only a miracle—meaning unprecedented and unlikely regional cooperation among the former Soviet republics that claim portions of the sea—can bring back nature’s beautiful mistake.
